Gym Bunny

So we're just over halfway into the first month of the new year and life's going pretty well . The new series of Call The Midwife has started, it has snowed, I've been leaving hopeful notes left, right and center and I've been exercising on a regular basis ! .... Okay, well maybe that last one was a tiny little lie . Caught up in the excitement of the new year, this is one of my new years resolutions that got pushed aside. Now I'm determined to start exercising more. They problem is ( and always has been ) motivation, or rather the lack of it ;). So to get us all going I thought I'd write a post of exercise motivation ! Here we go :)

You DON'T have to go to the gym.

There are so many different ways to exercise and you have to find a form of exercise that you enjoy , otherwise you're not going to keep going are you ? From swimming ( my favorite choice ) to Tennis to the gym . Find what you enjoy ! You could even mix it up. For example, if you do join a gym , you could join one in a leisure center that also has a swimming pool or offers other sports that you could try out :) I'm planning on going to the gym once a week and to swim each Saturday :)

Have a mantra

Yes... you will look like a weirdo and get very strange looks when you're on the Running machine , mumbling to yourself . But who cares ? That guy staring at you should be running too and you'll have the nicer bum in the end so ... Karma ;) I find repeating a motivating phrase over and over as you work out can really help ! Let me know in the comments what phrases motivate you :) I like "It already hurts, you're already tired, so get something out of this."

Make a motivating playlist

As much as I dislike admitting this on the world wide web ... I run to Eminem music. I fully blame my Eminem obsessed best friend ( But she's lovely and beautiful and the best so I'll forgive her ) but it really helps me to run faster and there's actually been studies proving that Eminem music helps you work out better :) But whatever music you love , then make yourself a perfect playlist so you don't get board ! Try to mix slower and faster songs so you don't get too worn out and die or anything !

Buy yourself what you need

I mentioned that I'm starting swimming again, when I made this decision it was hard because I'm not very comfortable with my body soooo I went out shopping and brought home a very lovely, red and white polka dot swimming costume :) I'm now really excited to go and show it off ! Make sure you kit yourself out so you feel confident doing whatever it is you're doing because ... well I think you're wonderful so you deserve to feel as good as I know you are <3

Reward yourself

One gym session ... then one chocolate bar . Fifty laps of the swimming pool ... then that gorgeous nail varnish you wanted last Saturday :) Make it worth your while !!!

Pinterest it

There is nothing that pinterest can't motivate you to do ! Seriously, type in exercise motivation and you'll find millions of wonderful quotes. My favorite that I found is " No matter how slow you're going, you're running laps around everyone on the couch "

How do you motivate yourself to get excising and healthily :) When I'm exercising I tend to naturally begin to eat healthily and then I begin to have so much more energy because I'm treating my body well and as a result I'm happier. So I'm really looking forward to starting swimming soon and getting some endorphin's going !

Stay Strong <3 Stay Smiley :)

  1. Hi, Marianne! (You have a beautiful name by the way) I'm a fellow Beau Blogger <3 This is the first post of yours I've read and I've already fallen in love with your blog and writing style! I really enjoyed reading these tips. I also started working out more (both because it's a new year and because my body has always been the thing I am most self conscious about). I love all of these motivators - both of the quotes you included made me smile and are very true; I need to say them out loud to myself. I also made it a goal to look in the mirror and tell myself, out loud, that I AM beautiful. I haven't done it yet, but I sure hope that it helps. Maybe you could try it, too. I love making playlists on Spotify and making one for exercising sounds like an awesome plan. Thank you for all the great ideas!

  6. Love this list, Marianne! Working out has always been something I've felt strongly on for almost 10 years now. These are a few of my tips I use too:
-I work out at home, keep a fun playlist handy, if possible, put on a Friends DVD while working out in the basement, keep track of which days I've worked out and which days I still need to (I don't keep a list handy, but just gauge it out as my week goes along) and eat a balanced meal (sometimes!)
It can be so difficult making the commitment but I find when you get into a routine, it helps out a TON!

  7. I run with a mantra as well! I repeat under my breath shut up shut up shut up. Probably as a response to the devil on my shoulder tempting me to quit exercising. I should try listening to Eminem. I usually listen to the Pretty Reckless when I workout because their music is very loud and fast and angry, which helps me push forward. Great motivating tips! The best thing I can add is to just plan out in your head something you want to do afterwards, whether it be planning the perfect outfit for something or planning your next blog post or planning your study schedule. That helps distract me.

    1. Haha I think that's a brilliant mantra and I love the reasoning :) I guess any music with strong beat of motivating lyrics would have a similar effect, It's mainly down to personal taste :) That's a great idea I'm definitely going to try that because I always could do with more time for blog planning and have never thought of that !

  10. Marianne, awesome tips and this could not have come at a better time! I'm defintiely feeling that mid-winter slump where I really want to get in shape but the motivation is just not there...I'd rather just go straight to bed and snuggle up in my blankets! I definitely agree with not having to go to the gym, when I workout at home I tend to do it a lot more consistently! I also love the idea of treating myself, what a great tip! I loved this post! I hope you are having a wonderful week my amazing friend, thanks for the inspiration! XO -Kim

    1. The mid-winter slump can be a nightmare but I guess we'll feel great once we pull ourselves out ! Even if bed and blankets sound wonderful right now hehe :) I think a lot of people find it easier to work out at home I'm definitely going to try getting into a regular routine of working out at home :)

  11. hahaha nothing wrong with a little faking it till you make ;) One of my resolutions this year was also to start exercising more. I signed up for the gym but I haven't been able to go as often as I would like because of school and work. Especially because I prefer going to the gym in the morning rather then in the afternoon when I'm all tired but I'm always busy in the morning time. But I want to make an effort to actually stay motivated and get to the gym more often. I think rewarding yourself is definitely a big part of staying motivated because it's always such a great feeling getting rewarded after hard work :) I also love what you said about having a mantra. I really wish I could do swimming instead! I Love to feel like a mermaid haha but the gym is good for now haha. let me know how the swimming goes :D Hope you are having a lovely week so far Marianne x

    1. Absolutely hehe :) It really can be difficult , I completely relate because I don't get home from college until late and then I'm snowed under with math and then it's like time for exercise just dissappears ! I like doing it in the morning as well, it's a good feeling to know you've started the day off right :) I'm so excited to start swimming , I'm actually doing it partly to challenge myself to build my self confidence up :)

  12. Thank you so much Rainbow , nothing makes me happier than to think I'm making people smile :) That's absolutely brilliant and it could be applied to so many things ! I'm not sure it's quite hardcore running but you know .. you can see I'm try haha :) They really are and the beat makes it easier to run :)

  13. I love this post. It is sincere and true. I completely agree, you don't have to be a gym rat if it is not you. I hate gym not because there is something wrong with it but because I cannot exercise by myself, I get bored of the machines and I end up leaving 30 minutes into my session with not a single sweat on my face. I follow lot of youtube exercise gurus and healthy chefs too.
I read one book (I think it was 'The Body Book" by Cameron Diaz and Sandra Bark although I am not too sure.) It said that you should never reward yourself with food. It is so much easier and healthier to reward yourself with things like make up, clothes, accessories. I stand by this because you can easily get a addicted to get food rewards and then your exercise wouldn't benefit you.
Having said that, You really inspired me. I've been needing to start being more active and I think I will be form now on.

    1. Thank you so so much for such a lovely comment ! Exactely , you have to find what works for you , for example my sister often talks about following youtubers who teach yoga :) That sounds really interesting, I might see if I can find that book and give it a read ! I agree , it's not good to teach yourself that food is a reward because it's a necessity to nourish your body with the vitamins it needs :)
